Duplicate Content and Search Engines
The subject of duplicate content and search engines is a tricky one. Like oil and water, they do not bode well with one another and cause serious problems for a webmaster. For further clarification, duplicate content is nothing more than having identical word-for-word content within the same website or on a completely different website altogether. Search engines like Google are on the prowl against duplicates; when the search engine finds a duplicate, it is filtered out much to the dismay of the webmaster.
In order for a website to be 100% duplicate-free, a publisher or copywriter must know that the content is original and at least 80% to 90% unique beforehand; otherwise, they could succumb to the filter. A few webmasters may knowingly produce redundant content as a deliberate attempt to trick search engines. This method is usually found in the form of taking original content and rearranging it on another page or using the exact same content on multiple pages across the net.
To avoid the duplicate content filter, a publisher must have the tools necessary to spot duplicate content from the beginning. Until recently, no software could do this effectively, but now a tool called DCFinder makes the process of finding duplicate content much easier. This is because it was created similar to the Googlebot, which crawls across thousands of websites while analyzing the data. As such, DCFinder generates all the links available from a website and then searches for duplicates in all the associated pages.
Having a tool like this as part of the publisher’s arsenal greatly benefits the overall content that is produced and published on the web. For example, after a copywriter completes an article, DCFinder can validate its uniqueness by quickly searching for duplicate content. As a standalone desktop application, it provides more advanced tools than online services that claim to find duplicate content and plagiarism.
In the case of eCommerce websites, it is still important to provide original descriptions for each of the products in the store; otherwise, these identical instances could fall prey to the duplicate content filter — searchbots consider this spam and will filter out these repeat descriptions. DCFinder makes it possible to locate all the duplicate content on a page before it is published; therefore, it eliminates possible content that would otherwise be filtered out later. This keeps a website honest and original and always provides fresh and unique content for its viewers.
